Choosing where
Seminyak or Canggu for a long stay
Canggu is Bali’s best-known base for remote workers and surfers, and the busier of the two. Seminyak is calmer and more polished, with restaurants and the beach within a walk of a quiet lane. For a month, the right one is the one whose pace matches the week you want.
Canggu in a paragraph
The island’s centre of gravity for remote workers: the densest cluster of cafés and coworking spaces, surf, a young and international crowd and a lot of building. It rewards people who want a scene on the doorstep, and it asks them to put up with traffic and construction.
Seminyak in a paragraph
An older, more settled part of the south-west coast: boutiques, restaurants, beach clubs, and quiet residential lanes a few minutes’ walk from all of it. It is less of a nomad scene and more of a base; the scene is a short ride away rather than at the gate.
Work
If you need cafés and coworking spaces daily, Canggu has more of them in a smaller area. If you need a quiet room and a table and will go out some days, Seminyak’s lanes are calmer. See working from a villa for what to check in any villa.
Getting about
Traffic is Bali’s unavoidable fact and it decides drive times more than distance. Seminyak is easier to be in on foot: restaurants and the beach are walkable from a good lane. Canggu is more spread out and more often done by scooter.
Which for what
A month of remote work with a social life built in: Canggu. A month of remote work with quiet evenings and good restaurants a walk away: Seminyak. A retreat or a small group: Seminyak, for access and privacy. A first visit to Bali: either, but Seminyak is the easier landing.
