Choosing where

Where to stay in Bali for a group or family

There is no single best area in Bali for a group or a family: each has a different pace. Seminyak suits groups who want restaurants and the beach on foot from a quiet lane, and families with older children; the others suit other weeks. What matters is the week you want.

Choose the week first

Decide whether the trip is beach and restaurants, surf and cafés, culture and rice fields, or a calm seaside for small children. The area follows from that, and so does the kind of place to stay.

Seminyak

Restaurants, shops and beach clubs close together on the south-west coast, with quiet residential lanes behind them. It suits friends who want evenings out and families who want easy meals. Is Seminyak good for families? Yes, for older children and for adults who like to walk to dinner; for toddlers, read Seminyak with kids for what to plan around. Villa Aniri is in a lane seven minutes on foot from the restaurants.

Canggu

The surf and remote-work base: more cafés and coworking spaces, a younger crowd and more traffic and building. See Seminyak or Canggu.

Ubud

Inland, among rice terraces and temples, with no beach. It suits a culture, yoga and nature week; most visitors add it to a beach stay rather than choosing it alone.

Sanur and Nusa Dua

Both are calmer, seaside areas on the east and south-east, often chosen by families with young children for their gentler water and quieter streets. They are less lively in the evening than Seminyak.

A villa or a hotel

For eight people a villa gives one address, a kitchen and a pool of your own; a hotel gives services and no work. See villa or hotel for a family and, for sixteen or twenty-four, groups of 8, 16 or 24.

This guide keeps to what we can vouch for: this house, this lane, and things that are simply true of Bali. Where it would need a fact we have not checked — a restaurant’s current form, a price we do not set, a rule that changes — we have left it out rather than guessed, and said who to ask instead. If something here is wrong or out of date, tell us and we will fix it.
